Senior Manager IT Operations

Job Description

Primary Function:

The I.T. Senior Manager’s role is vital to ensure streamlined IT daily operations in alignment with the business objectives of the organization. This individual will plan, coordinate, direct, and design and offer strategic thoughts on all IT-related activities of the organization, as well as provide administrative direction and support for daily operational activities of the IT department. The IT Senior Manager will work closely with other IT Managers Leaders of all levels along with and business decision makers to identify, recommend, develop, implement, and support cost-effective technology solutions for all aspects of the technical infrastructure. The IT Senior Manager is expected to collaborate with peers in Grainger US with solutions, options and be a forward thinker.  This person is also responsible to ensure all documents related to IT policies, procedures, and best practices are up to date. This person should be very process oriented, establish KPIs and metrics from which to drive decisions for the IT team. The IT Senior Manager will respond quickly in emergency situations; communicates, escalates, and manages the situation so there is no impact to the business.  Prevention vs reaction is the norm.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities: 

  • Ensures optimum availability and performance of all production, testing and development environments, including systems performance and tuning, data backup, recovery, and DR
  • Manages all hardware/software installations and configuration changes and ensuring that all changes adhere to configuration change management policies and procedures
  • Prepares and maintains policies and procedures related to production systems operations
  • Participates in cross-functional projects to gain perspective on other parts of the business
  • Set clear deliverables around requirements and timeline of work for the team
  • Manages all people leadership responsibilities including but not limited to performance management, recruitment, vacation scheduling, workforce management, coaching, development, and training, etc.
  • Responds quickly in emergency situations
  • Coordinates and balances the workloads of IT team members by effective work allocation, workflow, and prioritization
  • Prepares and maintains policies and procedures related to production systems operations
  • Strong vendor management skills
  • Evaluates new computing technologies to ascertain potential value for the company

Preferred Education & Experience: 

  • Minimum 5 years of experience leading and managing team members and consultants
  • University degree in Computer Science or related degree
  • Demonstrated administrative and managerial skills in an IT environment
  • Experienced with Wintel (MS Windows 10, MS 2016 Server, RDP architecture, thin-client) platform, Unix, HP/Cisco Servers/Clusters, SAN infrastructure, AS/400, and S2K ERP infrastructure.
  • Experience with network and clustering architecture for high availability, backup/restore, disaster recovery, and performance monitoring. 
  • Demonstrated excellent project management, organizational, and teamwork skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced work environment and an ability to prioritize tasks effectively, while maintaining attention to detail
  • Familiar with SOX, PCI, and other regulatory compliance in an internal/external audited environment
  • Experience in developing requests for proposal, negotiate and administer vendor, outsourcer, and consultant contracts and service agreements.
  • Practice asset management for IT hardware, software, and equipment.
  • Highly motivated and possesses excellent leadership and coaching skills
